What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are a large and diverse class of organic compounds produced by a wide variety of plants, including cannabis, as well as some insects and fungi. They are responsible for the distinctive aromas and flavors of many plants and are used widely in the fragrance and flavoring industries.

Terpenes are synthesized in the resin glands of plants, where they serve a variety of functions, including deterring herbivores and attracting pollinators. In cannabis, terpenes are thought to contribute to the effects of different strains by interacting with cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, although more research is needed to fully understand their effects.

There are over 20,000 known terpenes, and they are classified based on the number of carbon atoms in their chemical structure. Some common terpenes found in cannabis include limonene, myrcene, pinene, and caryophyllene, each with its unique aroma and potential medicinal benefits.
